About polishing
Polishing removes stains and roughness left on the tooth surface by tea, coffee or smoking, using a special handpiece and polishing paste. It usually follows a scale and clean, takes about 10–15 minutes, is usually painless and, done properly, doesn't harm the enamel.
What it offers
- Removes fine stains and restores a natural shine
- Slows down new plaque and tartar
- Usually painless — no anaesthetic needed
- Completes a scale and clean
How it's done
- Gentle surface cleaning
- Polishing with paste
- Optional fluoride treatment
Aftercare
- Avoid tea, coffee, coloured drinks and smoking for 1–2 hours afterwards so the result lasts longer.
Common questions
Is polishing the same as whitening?
No. Polishing removes surface stains so your teeth return to their own natural shade, but it isn't a chemical whitening treatment.
How often should it be done?
Usually every six months — more often if you drink a lot of tea or coffee or smoke. Your dentist will advise you.
Does it hurt?
It's usually painless and needs no anaesthetic. If your teeth are sensitive you may feel brief, mild discomfort.
Can polishing damage the enamel?
Not when it's done with the right technique and equipment; it smooths the surface, which makes it harder for plaque to stick.
